EMERGENCY PROCEDURE AND SAFETY

I am displaying some questions and answers related to safety procedures in a radioactive plant which will be helpfull.

EMERGENCY PROCEDUCRE AND SAFETY

Q1.    What are type A & Type B Emergency in the plant? Give example.
A.      Type A : Minor fire in the plant, normal power , ventilation, compressor failure.
Type B: These are more severe & their probability of happening is less compared to Type A
                       Emergency.

Q2.    For less severe incidents, given below what action you will take?
A.     a) Normal power failure: Everybody from high block should come out without using lift and should
             gather in entrance hall.
         b) Emergency power failure: In this case , everybody should come out of the plant with the help of exit lights & installite and should assemble in the entrance hall reporting to respective supervisors.
         c)  Ventilation failure: In this case everybody should come out of the plant.
         d) High radioactive field in certain areas: HP clearance should be taken if work is there in the area.  If entry is restricted, one should avoid entering the area. Work should be done with proper personnel, protective equipment and should be done in minimum time.
         e) Radioactive spill: It should be prevented from spreading by putting cotton waste. HP should be intimated immediately.
         f) Fire in certain area: 1) First fire-fire in certain area should be shouted, 2) Use appropriate fire extinguishers to extinguish fire, 3) Direct the person to inform shift in-charge & fire station, 4) Switch off electrical supply of that area.

Q3.   If you have to go in an area where air activity is very high, what care you will take?
A.    If air activity in any area is very high, use respirator, gas mask or Fresh air line as per DAC (Derived Air Concentration) values. When FAL(Fresh Air Line) is used , keep one person as a stand by, all these apparatus should be checked for leak tightness.

Q4.   If a worker becomes unconscious in a radioactive area, what will you do ?
A.     First inform to control room, HP & First aid,. Bring the person from work site to comfortable place like Corridor. Release the clothes.  Check, where his respiration is ok. If required, give artificial respiration.

Q5.   If you find a radioactive liquid leaking in an area, what action will you take?
A.     We will try to control the spillage by cotton waste, stop the source. Also we will inform to C/R & HP.

Q6.   If you find a radioactive liquid spray in certain area, what will you do?
A.     Same as Q5

Q7.  While working in certain area, how will you come to know that air activity has gone high?
A.    Air activity increase is indicated by AREA MONITOR.

Q8.  Can you carry out radioactive work with supply fan stopped & exhaust fan running?
A.    Normally it is avoided but if required as an emergency we can work.

Q9.  Give examples of emergencies of more severe nature type B?
A.     Large scale release of radioactive material, criticality.
